- The black-footed mongoose Bdeogale nigripes lives in the Congo in dense jungle. It has a typical adult mass between 1 and 3 kg.
- The bushy-tailed mongoose Bdeogale crassicauda is found in east-central Africa.
- Jackson's mongoose Bdeogale jacksoni is found in the vicinity of Lake Victoria. It's adult mass is usually around 2 to 3 kg. This species specializes in eating army ants, although it will happily eat other insects and small animals.
