Phiomia was an early proboscid with only a very short trunk, more like a flexible upper lip. Its tusks were short, those on top curled down over the lower jaw, and the lower tusks formed a sort of chisel-scoop like a smaller version of the shovel-tukes of some later gomphotheres. It lived in the late Eocene to early Oligocene of north Africa.
