Pandas are unusual bears specialized for a bamboo diet. They are found in mountainous areas of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces in China. Since bamboo is such a poor diet for an animal with a carnivore's digestive tract, pandas are slow moving and loathe to expend energy except as strictly necessary, with a low metabolic rate and sedentary lifestyle. These bears do not establish a permanent den, but rather move up and down the mountain slopes with the seasons. Pandas have a unique adaptation for grasping bamboo - a projecting wrist bone which they use as a thumb, although it does not count as a Fine Manipulator in game terms. The panda bear is among the most characteristicly colored bears, with a white head, shoulders, and torso and black limbs, ears, nose, lips, and eye-patches.
