Red Deer

Cervus canadensis

Red deer are large European and Asian deer which also range into north Africa. They primarily live at the forest's edge, but in Britain have adaptaed to open moors and grasslands. They primarily graze on grasses in meadows and clearings, but will also browse on shoots and leaves. The stags grow spectacular antlers starting in spring, and which are shed in winter. For most of the year, red deer live in single-sex herds but during the rut in autumn the strongest stags will assemble harems of about twenty hinds which must be constantly defended from rivals. Stags in rut will roar to announce their presence. Fawns are born eight months later, and remain with their mothers for one year.
