Musk Deer

Moschus sp.

Musk deer are not true deer, but are closely related and have similar habits. They are found in Asia, typically in alpine scrub and forest habitats. These small ruminants no not have either horns or antlers, but the males do grow long canine teeth for fighting. They are shy and secretive, staying in dense undergrowth and moving about in darkness or twilight. These animals are typically solitary. The bucks fight with their fangs and hooves for breeding rights.

Buck musk deer have a musk gland between the belly button and their genitals. The musk in this gland is highly valued by humans. For this reason, musk deer are often hunted.

There are many species of musk deer, all are fairly similar in game terms.
