Axis Deer

Axis axis

Axis deer, or chital, are medium sized deer from India. They have spotted coats their whole lives. Chital are primarily grazers, but will also browse. They commonly associate with langurs for mutual defense - the acute hearing and sense of smell of the deer compliments the keen eyesight of the monkey. There is no well defined season when chital grow or shed antlers, or breed, as this may occur at any time during the year. The young are born after eight months, and are fully mature within two years. Stags with antlers are dominant over those without. Stags may announce their presence with growls and roars, and the deer may chuckle at each other as they walk. Axis deer live in mixed-sex herds of several dozen animals.
