Cape Buffalo

Syncerus caffer

The cape buffalo can be found throughout sub-saharan Africa. It is a large, sturdy bovid found near water in areas with grass and dense cover. They form herds ranging from a few animals to thousands. Males live with the herds for the rainy season, but form their own bachelor herds of 3 to 4 individuals in the dry season.

Cape buffalo are notoriously cranky, and will often turn on hunters or anyone harrasing them. Their wicked horns, massive size and speed make them dangerous opponents. Hunting and development have significantly reduced the number of buffalo and fragmented their range.
